The year now ending marks a less positive period in the smartphone industry, with a general decline in sales that almost no brand has escaped.
The difficulties imposed by the pandemic resulted in a reduced bet on creativity, perhaps shooting for the coming months the arrival of equipment of greater value to the general public.
Even so, life doesn’t stop and neither COVID-19 prevented the offer of attractive news for any pocket or personal taste. It is not yet that I abandoned my faithful iPhone X, but I confess that for the first time I felt the “bug” of changing smartphones, something that may be closer to happening than what I would like.
The following list aims to share with you the smartphones that most aroused my curiosity in 2020, whether due to the addition of new features or even for the bold design in a year that will be, I believe, a turning point for the sector.
Asus ROG Phone 3
The third iteration of the Asus gaming smartphone represents a relevant qualitative leap over the previous model, and cemented the brand’s dominant position in the segment of equipment dedicated to mobile gaming.
The AMOLED screen with 144Hz refresh rate and HDR10 + make this the perfect weapon for those who play on the phone, not forgetting the enhanced autonomy in relation to its predecessors. If we add a high-end processor and compatibility with the accessories of the ROG Phone II, we have a perfect package for this usage scenario.
Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC
The Poco X3 NFC should gather some consensus as to which is the best mid-range of the year. With a price of around € 200, it is difficult to find a better one.
Performance fluidity, IPS screen with 120Hz refresh rate, 33W fast charging and a good set of cameras make this smartphone a sure choice for those who don’t want to spend a lot of money.
OnePlus 8 Pro
With regard to the top of the range Android, I ended up recommending the OnePlus 8 Pro over and over to friends and family who don’t get along with user interfaces cooked from pure Android. It is not easy to find an UI so intuitive that it does not detract from the experience imagined by Google as OxygenOS, on top of that now with 30W wireless charging, AMOLED screen with Quad-HD + resolution and chip dedicated to reducing the infamous ghosting (drag from the image).
It is still very competent in the chapter of photography and video capture, equipped with one of the best camera configurations of 2020. The price is a bit different from the original proposal of OnePlus, but the 8 Pro is perfect for those who want the best of Android, without any type of commitment, especially at the software level.
The revolutionary smartphone from LG stands out especially for its bold design, in a year marked by folders that, in my opinion, still leave a lot to be desired in terms of practicality. The second rotating screen allows various configurations for viewing and use, presenting an unusual versatility in a device of this type.
Yes, it is expensive and does not offer the most high-end specifications, but it sets the tone for further innovation in this market where all brands seem to follow each other’s ideas. In a sea of copies, LG dared to be different, and therefore deserves my recognition as the most innovative smartphone of 2020.
iPhone 12 Mini
The best smartphone I had the opportunity to try out this year was the Mini version of the new Apple iPhone. The return to the design of the time of the late iPhone 4 in a reduced format became a passion at first sight, being the first smartphone since 2017 to make me consider giving up the iPhone X that I carry in my pocket every day.
I had been asking for a smaller iPhone for several years, but I refused to give up an almost borderless OLED screen and all the features and characteristics of a high-end product.
Apple was able to bring together all that it aspired to in a single phone, but the uncertainty regarding autonomy leads me to wait another year before making the decision to upgrade if the future A15 Bionic processor manages to guarantee a few more hours of use during the day.
