Telegram: how to prevent your contact from being discovered

Telegram is one of the best instant messaging applications and services, with a strong social component. It stands out for its channels, comparable to WhatsApp groups (with the necessary differences), being a good place to socialize.

This platform welcomes more and more users and is full of functions that deserve to be divulged as is the case of “Nearby People” that allows us to contact people in the vicinity, but also exposes our number within a radius of 3 km.

“People Near”, the peculiar function of Telegram

  • Opens the Telegram application on your Android or iOS smartphone
  • Locate the menu icon for Settings / Options – signaled by the three horizontal strokes – figure 1

  • Find and tap the “Close people“- figure 2

If you are a recent user of the Telegram platform this feature will be disabled. So, by default, our number is hidden from other users, but if you want to take advantage of its features, this is where you can do it.

We can activate the function and find new people

Touching “Stay visible”, the following warning will be displayed (figure 3). There the function is briefly explained, telling us that this way we can find new people who also use Telegram and get in touch with them.

It works very similar to a proximity radar – using the phone’s GPS location – to find contacts in the vicinity – within a 3 km radius.

  • To activate the function – click on “Stay visible”

As soon as it is active, the function shows us a list of contacts in the vicinity. We can see people – within a 3 km radius – who also use Telegram.

From the list, it is possible to touch any displayed contact and start a conversation. The platform will present some contact details such as name, phone number if it is set to public and the option to Send Message.

  • Touch Send Message in the contact menu

From here we start the conversation with the contact in question. Note that we can also add you to the contact list, in case you want to stay close for future conversations, for example.

Once the conversation has started, it is possible to call (voice call), video conference, or text message through the platform chat.

How to prevent them from seeing contact in close people

  • Touch the “Stop Showing Me “ – figure 5

At any time, we can prevent our number from being displayed in this Nearby People menu. To do this, just touch the option presented above (figure 5), from there, our contact will not be discovered.

This is just one of several options offered by the Telegram platform, being a good way to meet new people, but also a window that can expose our contact.

Finally, for greater privacy and security on this platform, see how to prevent messages and contacts from strangers, with the step-by-step guide.
