Sony was the protagonist of one of CES ‘biggest surprises last year when it showed us a prototype electric vehicle with the name Vision-S. After many months without news about the Japanese company’s sedan, new images and information about the prototype that is already being tested on the road now arrive.
Sony took the kick-off at CES 2021 to reveal new videos of the Vision-S tram being driven on a private track but also on public roads in Austria.
Since little was known so far about this Japanese company’s adventure in the electric vehicle market, a little more was revealed about the way in which the design was conceived and the development of the car and its technology was approached.
Vision-S is Sony’s proposal for the future of electric vehicles
According to statements by Frank Stein, president of one of Sony’s partners in this project, Vision-S is just the starting point for the Japanese brand.
The executive guarantees that the partnership between Magna Steyr and Sony is to continue, putting aside signs that this prototype would never see the light of day.
In the video you can see above, Sony reveals that it has increased the number of sensors in the vehicle to 40, allowing it to have a 360 degree spatial sense. The brand is also looking for ways to better use its capabilities, pointing to safety as a factor of special importance.
One of the things that stands out the most in this Vision-S is its information panel consisting of 5 distinct zones that show data on settings, navigation, music and video. Obviously, a portion of this display is dedicated exclusively to navigation, a central element of the driving experience.
Vision-S represents a coalition between several brands
Sony is also working on several new features for your project, such as a voice assistant or even the possibility of using gestures to control Vision-S options. The brand’s proposal also includes allowing software updates via 5G connectivity.
One of the funniest details about Vision-S is the way it uses a dedicated camera to monitor the condition of passengers. If you detect one sleeping in the back seat, it will automatically adjust the temperature in your particular seat to promote your comfort.
Sony has several partners in this project that seems to be of great importance, including Bosch and Continental. A prototype electric vehicle of the future could not be successful if it did not also count on the help of several companies linked to autonomous driving.
In this regard, the Japanese brand is well served, with the help of AIMotive, Elektrobit Automotive and Vodafone, all of which have proven themselves in these travels.
