Snapchat decided to try its luck on the “Super apps” model, quite popular in China. These are several small applications within the main one, in a kind of ecosystem. In the case of Snapchat, the apps are called Snap Minis.
These applications are lightweight and have simplified functions for each one. The first Snap Minis are the Headspace, Flashcards, Prediction Master and Let’s Do It. All of these are programmed in HTML in order to have the best performance on the user’s smartphone.
Headspace is a meditation app, with a simple interface. The only thing the user sees is a button to control his breathing. The app will then tell the user to inhale and exhale, in controlled measures. Flashcards are a tool to support studies.
Prediction Master is a kind of messaging app, where users simply send cards with emotions to each other. Emotions are sent in the form of animated dolls, with colors and faces. Finally, we have Let’s Do It, an app that allows friends to get together and make joint decisions.
In the future, there will be even more bold apps
According to Snapchat, the platform intends to partner with the Coachella music festival, so that users can use these mini apps during the event. Snap Minis will be launched from today but it is not specified whether it will be a worldwide launch.
However, in Asia, “Super apps” are extremely popular. Tencent’s WeChat, for example, has thousands of mini apps within the application.
