Valve presented its usual Steam platform statistics report for the previous year, and the numbers couldn’t be more illuminating. 2020 was a bad year in many ways but it was excellent for the PC as a video game platform, influenced by the pandemic scene but also by the launch of highly anticipated games.
Titles like Cyberpunk 2077 contributed a lot to this growth, but the bulk of this result will come from the fact that more people are at home. With more free time, there were those who dedicated themselves to entertainment, with video games being the most sought after goods.
Steam is the platform of choice for PC gaming
Compared to the year 2019, sales on Steam rose 21% and this time it seems that people really decided to play the titles they bought.
In 2020, the platform surpassed 120 million active users, making the PC the largest gaming platform in the world surpassing consoles. In comparison, PlayStation registered 107 million active users and Xbox stood at 90 million.
Other interesting and revealing numbers of huge growth are an average of 62.6 million active players per day and a record 24.8 million players simultaneously on Steam servers last December.
The controllers are also increasingly popular on Steam, with 46.6 million people using this game weapon.
The number of active players during the past year also translated into 25.2 exabytes of downloads (1 exabyte equals one million terabytes), with download traffic reaching over 52tbps.
Steam wants to continue to grow
Valve’s virtual reality platform, SteamVR, was also entitled to significant growth. Last year there were 104 million VR sessions and almost 2 million new users of this type of devices. Revenues in this niche rose 71%, justifying the continued investment in SteamVR.
Valve also looks to the future and has already outlined its strategy for 2021. The next big goal is to make Steam available in China, taking the opportunity to fine-tune the user experience.
An investment will also be made in improving the platform’s mobile application and security, with special emphasis on login and account protection.
The brand’s bet on Linux will also be reinforced, exploring new ways to bring more games to the operating system and to more and more players.
