OPPO X 2021 is one of the most innovative smartphones of the decade. It comes to challenge the concept established by the foldable smartphones of Samsung and Huawei with their Fold and Mate X2, respectively. For OPPO, the screen must extend or contract, not fold.
The Chinese manufacturer recently introduced this conceptual product after months of study and preparation. Its particularity is due to the ability to extend and retract the entire screen, as well as the respective metal support structure.
This system guarantees a strong structure and screen surface that is always smooth, without creases, as shown in the video.
This is how the OPPO X 2021 extension and support mechanism works
We saw the first functional prototype of the product during the Chinese manufacturer’s Inno Day 2020, an event dedicated to the presentation of its news. Now, during MWC Shangai 2021 the terminal is ready to be used and we have already seen it in all its splendor.
We emphasize that your screen can expand from 6.7 inches to 7.4 inches when the user so desires. To this end, the brand implements a “treadmill” system, with two engines to assist its expansion and retraction.
The expandable system is called Warp Track, consisting of a steel laminate that is only 0.1 mm thick. It is enough to guarantee a support base for the entire screen, preventing it from bending or showing depressions during use.
OPPO’s extendable smartphone is a vision of the future
The manufacturer’s concern is with the durability of the screen and other smartphones. Thus, they developed this system of steel blades that overlap when the phone is “contracted” or closed and slide in parallel when it is open.
A possible analogy for this Warp Track system is to interlock your fingers when joining hands. In OPPO X 2021 we have a 6.8 mm axis on which the flexible OLED screen can slide without forming creases, grooves or imperfections on the surface.
On the other hand, it is a phone that, when closed, is relatively thick, about 1.4 cm thick.
OPPO also works on airborne charging solutions, one of the industry’s next big challenges. So far, both Xiaomi and Motorola have shown their approaches to this concept.
Finally, OPPO is preparing to reveal its achievements to the world by the end of this week.
