The famous Chinese leakster Digital Chat Station posted on the social network Weibo about Oppo’s future smartwatch. The gadget is said to have an electrocardiogram function, such as the Apple Watch Series 5 and Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2.
Previously, Oppo Vice President Brian Shen had already confirmed the design of Oppo’s smartwatch. The brand will opt for a square design, just as Xiaomi did with the Mi Watch. However, the physical similarities to the Apple Watch are obvious.
In this way, it appears that Oppo will follow in the footsteps of Xiaomi and essentially create a watch with a design and features similar to the Apple Watch. It goes without saying that the watch will have a much lower value. For example, Mi Watch is around 250 euros.
Oppo and Xiaomi have been competing fiercely in the Asian market. In fact, Oppo with the Realme sub-brand has “beaten head on” with Redmi, Xiaomi’s sub-brand, in the Asian market (mainly in India).
When will the Oppo smartwatch arrive?
The Digital Chat Station’s publication revealed nothing about release dates nor did Oppo offer any suggestions yet. However, we can make a simple assumption: Oppo will launch its flagship Oppo Find X2 in the first quarter of 2020, probably during MWC or a separate event.
Thus, knowing the usual strategies of the brands, it is likely that the brand will announce the watch with the mobile phone or shortly thereafter. In this way, Oppo and Xiaomi will compete not only in the mobile phone market but also in smart watches.
