Oppo put itself in the spotlight last week during its Inno Day 2020. All the hype created was due to the presentation of the functional prototype of the Oppo X 2021, its first smartphone with a scrollable screen.
This presented itself as the perfect possible alternative to foldable smartphones and, everything indicated that it could be launched on the market as early as next year. However, new information ends up undoing all the rumors created so far.
Speaking to the Android Authority website, an Oppo representative stated that there are no immediate plans for a commercialization of his first scrollable smartphone, serving only as a guideline for the transformation and evolution of his smartphones.
Rollable screen smartphones are a difficult investment to justify, says Oppo
Oppo added that to justify the sale of a new smartphone, it is necessary to carry out a vast market study in order to confirm its viability, and this takes a long time. Therefore, everything indicates that soon we will not see a smartphone with a scrollable screen being launched by the manufacturer.
Instead, it’s possible that your next smartphones will surprise us with new design approaches.
In addition, it was also confirmed in the same statement that, in their current prototype, they are using a plastic layer to protect the scrollable screen. Thus, it is guaranteed that in terms of scratch resistance, it will be on the same level as foldable smartphones. This may be one of the factors that contribute to a delay in marketing.
But that does not mean that we will not see rollable smartphones being launched in 2021. Even if Oppo decides to slow down its investment in this new segment, it is still possible to see LG take the lead, with the mysterious “Project B”.
