Nvidia has finally introduced the long-awaited RTX 3060 desktop graphics card, which promises to dominate the mid-range market. The GPU will hit stores sometime in February and will bring Ampere architecture for a price of around € 350.
The RTX 3060 thus becomes the most affordable Ampere graphics card compatible with Ray Tracing and DLSS on the market, now joining its “older sister,” the RTX 3060 Ti. It should be noted that this price of € 350 applies to the card reference, so Nvidia partners can opt for higher values.
Nvidia wants to dominate the market with the RTX 3060
The RTX 3060 now presented offers 12GB of GDDR6 memory, which is an excellent addition when compared to the Ti version which only includes 8GB. Of course, Nvidia’s new proposal is not so fast, but more memory means considerable performance especially at resolutions below 4K.
This GPU also uses a new version of the Ampere architecture, with the designation GA106. The brand’s intention was to deliver a more balanced design while simultaneously reducing energy consumption when compared to the GA104 version of the more powerful plates.
The RTX 3060 consumes 170W of your power supply when taken to maximum capacity, which ends up aligning with what would be expected for a mid-range printer.
For this new graphics, Nvidia has activated a total of 28 streaming multiprocessors, which translates into 3584 CUDA cores. Its performance is above the RTX 2060, coming close to 2070 in some particular situations.
The base clock speed of this GPU is 1320 MHz, and can reach 1780 MHz in boost mode. Compared to the RTX 3060 Ti the difference is not big, especially looking at the price difference. Obviously, impartial testing will be needed to determine the real value of the 3060.
RTX 3060 will be direct competitor to AMD RX 5700 XT
It will also be interesting to see how brands like Asus, Gigabyte or MSI will address the thermal design of this GPU.
Typically the graphics cards in this range use cooling via two fans, but the possibility of some more compact models will not be ruled out.
This will be Nvidia’s immediate response to the AMD RX 5700 XT, which falls in the same price range but appears to offer slightly lower performance.
Of course, it will be more significant at this point that AMD does not have access to the Ray Tracing technology that both attracts players and producers. This factor can thus definitely contribute to the choice of some users and tip the balance for the green team.
