Recently, the legendary prototype of the Nintendo PlayStation system was put up for auction by Heritage Auctions, possibly being the only unit in the world. The auction has finally come to an end, having sold for $ 360,000, a value that will definitely disappoint its (former) owners.
Despite having broken the record for the most expensive collectible ever in the world of video games, Nintendo PlayStation would be expected to reach much higher values. I recall that Diebold revealed during an interview that some time ago, he had been offered a private offer of $ 1.2 million.
Nintendo PlayStation is a milestone in console evolution
During the 1990s, a partnership between Nintendo and Sony allegedly arose, resulting in the Nintendo PlayStation. Although it was extremely important in the evolution of consoles at the time, it never reached a production stage and only prototypes were manufactured.
Everything indicates that this was the console that gave rise to the original Sony PlayStation, being compatible with both CD games and the mythical Super Nintendo cartridges.
Before the auction was held, Heritage Auctions itself stated that this was an item of incalculable value and could reach unbelievable values. This statement was made not only for what it represents in the history of video games, but also for being the only example in the world and still being 100% functional.
However, it is with great surprise that we see a product of “incalculable value” reaching only the mark of 360,000 euros at auction. This may not have been the best time to sell Nintendo PlayStation.
