After many rumors and trying to keep her plans intact at all costs, the organizer of Mobile World Congress was unable to avoid canceling the technology fair.
Through an official statement published today, John Hoffman – CEO of the GSMA – confirmed that they were obliged to cancel the MWC 2020 to be held in Barcelona.
Causes for the cancellation of MWC 2020 are more than obvious!
Since the first manufacturer (LG) revealed that it would cancel its presence at MWC due to the great threats caused by the Coronavirus outbreak, the realization of the event began to be questioned.
During the days that followed, many companies revealed their concerns and canceled their events. After seeing LG, Amazon, Nokia, Ericsson, Sony, Vivo and other big companies cancel their events, the GSMA had no option but to cancel the event.
Obviously, this was not the motivation revealed in the official statement. As Reuters reported, the GSMA CEO said the technology fair was canceled due to concerns over the Coronavirus outbreak.
Green light from the World Health Organization did not save MWC 2020
Hours before the decision was made official, the World Health Organization reported that the cancellation of large “meetings of people” is by no means.
In addition, the Mayor of Barcelona – Ada Colau – also sent a message to try to eliminate the many concerns, stating that there was no reason to cancel MWC.
It is difficult to see how any of these communiqués were published officially, considering all the risks that MWC 2020 could bring not only to the Spanish population but to the rest of Europe.
Usually, among the employees attending the technology fair, between 5 and 6 thousand come from China, without counting the large number of visitors. Considering that the epicenter of this outbreak was in China, where more than 44,000 cases and 1,100 deaths have been reported, the risk is evident.
Manufacturers should use online events to present their products
Thanks to the great technological advances of the last years, it is possible to hold large events with transmissions exclusively online through different platforms.
So far, due to the Coronavirus, several brands have already decided to resort to this type of event to prevent the spread of the virus. For example, Xiaomi will hold the presentation of the new Xiaomi Mi 10 tomorrow in an “online event”.
Although it has not been confirmed by any of the brands, it is very likely that we will be able to attend several events exclusively broadcast on the internet, where the many products that were expected at MWC 2020 will be revealed.
