In a statement on Microsoft's UK support site, the company announces the end of Cortana's application for Android and iOS. This measure will have practical effects on from January 31, 2020.
In a brief statement, Microsoft reveals that Cortana's application will disappear in the UK, Canada and Australia. We do not know if or when other markets will also lose access to their personal assistant.
Cortana will become available on Microsoft 365
In the same note, Microsoft reveals that Cortana will be integrated into the Microsoft 365 service pack. In addition, it is noted that Cortana will no longer be present in Microsoft Launcher.
Once this decision is made, Cortana will be available only on Windows. Your reminders, lists, and tasks service will now fall under the Microsoft To Do application, which can be installed on any Android or iOS smartphone.
Microsoft has already admitted that Cortana can't compete with Google Assistant or Alexa
The decision to remove Cortana's app from Android and iOS appears to be Microsoft's "towel-tossing" approach. And we can say that this is precisely what happened, but it is no surprise.
Earlier this year, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, said the company no longer viewed Cortana as a competitor to Google Assistant and Alexa. These last two assistants have dominated their niche market with a large advantage over Cortana.
Cortana had reached mobile platforms in December 2015 to create a greater symbiosis between Windows 10 and Android and iOS smartphones. Currently, the company has other tools that can do the same and the clear disadvantage against Google and Amazon products contributed to this outcome.
