MediaTek presented its latest generation of Dimensity processors for smartphones, with considerable improvements in performance and autonomy. The Dimensity 1200 does seem to match rival offerings like the Snapdragon 888 or the latest Samsung Exynos.
The two new offers mark the first time that the brand has resorted to a 6nm manufacturing process, integrating the Cortex-A78 high-performance cores.
MediaTek wants to catch Qualcomm and Snapgradon 888
The Dimensity 1200 flagship features a configuration based on an A78 “Ultra” core with a clock speed of 3GHz, combined with 3 A78 “Super” cores and 4 high-efficiency A55 cores.
To complement the design we have a graphics processor Mali-G77 with 9 cores and an artificial intelligence processor MediaTek APU 3.0.
The inclusion of an “Ultra” core aims to allow greater performance in demanding tasks that take advantage of only one of the cores, similar to what Qualcomm does with the Cortex-X1 in its 888.
MediaTek also revealed a Dimensity 1100 processor, which focuses more on a big.LITTLE base with 4 Cortex-A78 cores at 2.6GHz and 4 Cortex-A55.
Both new MediaTek CPUs allow for better performance in mobile gaming, being able to offer refresh rates of up to 168Hz.
MediaTek Dimensity 1200 represents a considerable leap over previous offers
In terms of photography, we see a redesigned ISP to allow the Dimensity 1200 flagship to offer resolutions up to 200MP. The Dimensity 1000 is at 108MP, but image processing speeds have been improved on both models allowing for new 4K video capabilities and intelligent focus.
These two new processors are also equipped with 5G capabilities to keep up with the industry trend, although they are not yet compatible with mmWave technology.
MediaTek says that both SoC are expected to start appearing on Android smartphones by the end of the first quarter of this year. The main candidate brands to use the new chips are Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and Realme.
