According to a new patent registered with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office), LG may be preparing to revolutionize the smartphone market.
As we can see from the various renders created by LetsGoDigital, this potential smartphone will come with a unique design featuring an expandable / retractable screen.
LG will break new ground for folding screens
As we see more and more manufacturers venturing into the folding smartphone segment, LG may decide to use folding panels entirely differently.
According to the details revealed by the new patent, the brand may decide to use the new folding panels to launch a retractable screen smartphone.
From what we can see in the various images, when "retracted" we get a very elongated screen, similar to that of the Sony Xperia 1. When you expand the screen, you get a large surface, resembling a tablet.
Unfortunately, as it is just a design patent, it has not been revealed how this mechanism will work.
Still in the images published with this patent, we can see how the rear panel will look. Hardware elements should be implemented at the ends of the smartphone, which will also serve as "handles" for when it is open.
This could be a great gaming smartphone.
Considering its large screen and rather ergonomic handles, this type of design could be great for a gaming smartphone.
However, for this to happen, they would also need to bring small accessories to improve interaction with the on-screen controls.
But, as with all registered patents, it is not synonymous with a "new smartphone" either. That is, despite being officially registered, nothing guarantees that LG will actually launch a smartphone with this design.
