Kirin 970 – the first processor with a dedicated NPU unit

It was at the hands (literally) of Richar Yu, Huawei CEO, that we got to know the new Kirin 970. This is an 8-core processor (4 x Cortex A73 and 4 x Cortex A53) with a frequency of 2.8GHz. This new processor was built on 10nm architecture, which will allow it to be 20% higher than the Kirin 960.

It also contains a dedicated 12-core graphics, but its main novelty is its dedicated NPU unit. This neuronal processing unit, for the first time integrated into a smartphone processor, will add new artificial intelligence features and give the processor 25 times better performance.

This is all because Huawei intends to put more emphasis on Artificial Intelligence, one of the technologies of the future. For Richard Yu, there is a clear need to endow our smartphones with even more intelligence.

On the same occasion, the current leader of Huawei took advantage of the cue to confirm that this will in fact be the processor of the new Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro. Although not specifically referred to these two models, the presence of this SoC was stressed. in the new Mate series.

Given these details, the new Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro will be equipment with a special focus on Artificial Intelligence. It remains to be seen whether Huawei will also choose to launch its own AI or will adapt one of the existing ones to its new NPU unit.
