During a phase in which much of the world is experiencing great difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Huawei seems to have taken the opportunity to surprise everyone and everything. According to the recent information published by IDC (International Data Company), Huawei finally managed to overtake Samsung during the second quarter of 2020, becoming the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world.
At a time when all manufacturers (with the exception of Apple) had negative sales figures compared to last year, Huawei managed to impress with losses much lower than its big rival.
According to IDC, Huawei managed to limit itself to a 5.1% drop, while Samsung was the most impacted by the pandemic with a drop of almost 30%. Thanks to this fall of the giant, Huawei started to dominate the smartphone market with an advantage of only 0.5%.
Huawei has finally accomplished its biggest goal, but it won’t be for a long time
After suffering several attacks by the United States government and being banned from using Google applications and services on their smartphones, few believed that Huawei would be able to achieve its biggest goal – surpassing Samsung. The incredible support shown by users in China has made Huawei able to remain at the top of the ranking of manufacturers and, thanks to the current atypical conditions, have even managed to take the lead.
However, it is important to note that Huawei was able to jump to the top position mainly because, Samsung saw its number of sales plummet during the second quarter. Although it is not guaranteed, it is very likely that the numbers will return to “normal” during this quarter, especially with the presentation and launch of the new Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and the new model of its foldable smartphones.
Despite Huawei’s great efforts to regain its popularity in international markets, the lack of Google services and applications continues to present itself as a major deal breaker for many users.
It will certainly be interesting to see what they will be able to do to try to maintain this leadership. However, it seems certain that Samsung will return to the top position as soon as most countries start to return to normal.
