GPD Win Review The Windows 10 Handheld Gaming Console

Opening the box and removing the protective sleeve, we find the sleek black device itself. Turning over, you’ll notice a switch responsible for adjusting the internal cooling fan for more precise cooling during gaming. On the back we find left and right shoulder buttons used for navigation and gaming, 1 USB type-C port, 1 mini HDMI port, a microSD card slot, 1 USB 3.0 port and a 3.5mm headset jack. There are speakers and venting located on the bottom, sides and back of the device as well.

GPD Win Review: Hardware

Opening the device we find a 5.5 inch IPS Multi-Touch Screen display capable of running resolutions of up to 1280 x 720. There is a full QWERTY keyboard and integrated analogue joysticks complete with directional pad and X, Y, A, B buttons for an optimised gaming experience. The top centre button is responsible for switching navigation from web browsing to gaming in an instant. The GPD Win runs on an Intel Atom X7 Z8750 64-bit chipset with 4GB of RAM and an integrated 405 HD graphics card. While this device is not optimal for running some of the more graphically intense PC games such as Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds or The Witcher 3, the GPD Win has more than enough power to run any Xbox 360-era titles or thousands of other retro style games.

Further, into the box, we find the plastic protective screen covers. There is also a USB type-C connector cable. There are the standard earbuds in black. And of course, there is the power adapter also in black. Finally, we have the 2 instruction manuals, one in Chinese and the other in English, detailing the full specs of the device. GPD Win Review: Functions

With the display powered on, you can see the device fits comfortably in the palm of your hands. Navigating the mouse with the analogue sticks is simple and the shoulder buttons on the back of the device function as your left and right mouse buttons. Using the switch in the middle allows you to switch the configuration from mouse mode to gaming mode with ease. Accessing the touch display, you can see that it is super responsive. This makes searching and browsing the web a breeze. Looking at the specifications, you can see that the GPD Win is, indeed, running on the 64-bit version of the Windows 10 Home operating system. With 4GB of RAM while fully utilizing the Intel Atom X7 Z8750 chipset. With the purchase of this type-c adapter, you can plug it directly into the GPD Win and get extra ports, connectivity and functionality from your device.

GPD Win Review: Software

Next, we’ll access the Steam gaming client. Before demonstrating a game, we’ll have a look at the many titles available on this platform that can be downloaded and played on this device. As you can see, this and other titles run flawlessly on this portable PC gaming system. The GPD Win has access to any Windows application or software such as SkyGo, Hulu or Netflix as shown here. The next app we’ll have a look at is Plex. This is a favourite application for streaming music and movies that can be used in conjunction with any wifi or home network. Here we are running the latest version of Kodi, the most famous television and movie streaming application to date, also available from the Windows app store. As you can see.
