Facebook wants to take advantage of the new features of Apple’s iOS 14 to pressure the broken apple company in the pre-definition of the messaging application.
I remember that on iOS 14 Apple gave users the possibility to pre-define some applications. For example, you can now choose Google Chrome by default instead of opening links clicked on Safari.
Facebook talks about democratization
Facebook referred to The Information newspaper: “We think that people should be able to choose different messaging applications and the default on their phones. In general, everything moves towards that point “.
That is, Facebook wants Facebook Messenger to be the primary communication application for the iPhone if the user so wishes. Actually it is not an unusual order, considering the news of iOS 14.
Apple may not like this request
However, Apple does not die of loves for applications like Facebook, mainly Facebook Messenger. Apple boasts that its iPhone is the safest device on the market with privacy policies that value the user. Hence the messages in iMessage are fully encrypted end-to-end. Like, for example, WhatsApp messages.
However, Facebook Messenger does not have end-to-end encryption natively. For that you need to click on the contact you want to talk to and then create a “secret conversation”.
In other words, bringing unencrypted applications as a standard could make users understand that Apple was giving users a shock that those applications were worthy of such trust. Something that could cause problems in the future.
Let us remember that this new feature of iOS 14 does not give the possibility to set all applications as standard. For example, Apple Maps is still the default application and there is still no possibility to change it.
However, a “no round” from Apple to Facebook may trigger more problems for Apple due to “abuse of power” and monopoly. Something that is already being accused by Epic Games due to the Fortnite game and the 30% commission on the App Store.
