Facebook recently announced that it will further tighten control over publications made related to Covid-19, paying particular attention to vaccine information. The information was advanced in an interview given to The Guardian, at a time when the United Kingdom is preparing to start making the first vaccines available.
The new measures will be applied to both comments made on Facebook and Instagram, reinforcing a comment policy that has already resulted in the removal of more than 12 million publications since March this year.
Basically, whenever a publication mentions information related to Covid-19 and vaccines, it will be analyzed by health experts and, if confirmed as false, they were eventually removed.
Covid-19 vaccines will result in fake news tsunami on Facebook and Instagram
Everything indicates that the availability of Covid-19 vaccines in several countries will lead to a new wave of fake news, which could jeopardize its acceptance and administration to the population. Therefore, it is extremely important that social platforms of great influence such as Facebook and Instagram take a proactive stance to prevent the spread of this news.
According to Facebook, they will pay special attention to information content that addresses issues such as the safety, efficacy, ingredients or side effects of vaccines.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, there were many conspiracy theories created by different groups and, certainly, they gained strength again with the arrival of vaccines.
For the good of all, the measures now applied by Facebook with regard to fake news related to Covid-19 are much more aggressive. Usually, social networks mark information that could potentially be “wrong”, removing it from their suggestion logarithms. But this time, the content will be permanently deleted from Facebook and Instagram, avoiding any kind of spread.
