Confirmed: DTT will receive two new channels soon

DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) is increasing the options it makes available to consumers. And in the coming months it will receive two more channels, with the stamp of RTP. Confirmation arrives in Diário da República.

RTP Africa and Knowledge Channel on the way to DTT

The Resolution of the Council of Ministers that “expands the offer of program services on digital terrestrial television” was published this Tuesday. In this it is mentioned that soon RTP Africa and the knowledge channel will be added to the platform.

“The Government decided to reevaluate the tender, and, alternatively, decided to extend the offer of digital terrestrial television to two services of the concessionaire of the public television service, namely: RTP Africa and a new program service dedicated to knowledge”, can read in the official document.

The objective of making RTP Africa available on an open signal is to “reinforce the connection between UK and African countries with UK’s as an official language”, but also to add “diversification (…) to the cultural panorama of our country”.

The second channel, linked to knowledge, will only take place after “the renegotiation of the public radio and television service concession contract has been concluded”. The main objective of this channel is to make a “scientific dissemination” and give “access to knowledge”, creating synergies with “schools and universities”.

As mentioned in the document, the public station is completely free to end RTP MemĂłria in DTT. The goal will be to be able to broadcast programs for young people and children throughout the entire program.

RTP3 and RTP MemĂłria reach DTT in 2016

Remember that DTT started in UK in 2009, with the so-called “four channels”. In 2013, the Parliament channel entered the list, and only in 2016 did consumers start to have more options. Since then, RTP3 and RTP Memória are also on the list. The latter served, in a pandemic context, to encompass the “Study at Home” program
