Apple Pay is next target for EU investigations

Unsurprisingly, the European Competition Commission (ECC) regularly investigates companies for anti-competitive tactics. There are several processes going on because of Google and Facebook for example. Apple has not escaped as its NFC payments service is also under investigation.

The information was confirmed by Margrethe Vestager, CEC Commissioner. A survey was sent to several online retailers to see if Apple has imposed conditions that prioritize their payment method over others.

<p>If the results of the questionnaire warrant, further investigation will be opened, according to Vestager. The Commissioner recently spoke at the Web Summit in Lisbon on the subject and mentioned that Apple Pay "raises some concerns about competition."</p>
<p>CEC is trying to justify anti-competitive practices on Apple Pay. One of these may be the fact that on iPhones, iPads and Apple Watch, the only NFC payment accepted is Apple Pay. However, to what extent can this be considered anti-competitive? Apple bets a lot on the ecosystem as we know it.</p>

<h2>Does Apple Pay work in UK?</h2>
<p>This year Apple Pay started to work officially in UK. The service is compatible with the Mastercard network, which includes some UK’s banks such as Crédito Agrícola and Millenium. Also, you can use virtual banks like Monese, R26 and Revolut.</p>
