Apple announced in 2017 the disruptive iPhone X with wireless charging and a new design that would guide its products since then. It was in that hot September that Cupertino’s technology would also present its enigmatic AirPower.
At first glance, it was a simple wireless charger capable of charging up to three devices simultaneously. The concept was simple, to power the new iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time. Execution, however, would never materialize.
AirPower was unveiled by Apple in September 2017
However, time has passed and Apple’s official wireless charger has still not reached the market. Speculation was quick to point out several reasons for this, but it would be Cupertino’s own technology to point out the causes for the outcome.
According to the American company, it was not possible to get around certain problems with the overheating of the wireless charging coils, which, being close to each other, brought several obstacles to the product.
This led Apple to claim, after years of waiting, that the project would be abandoned due to the overlapping of the coils. As AirPower were juxtaposed and, in certain points, overlapped, they did not meet the ideal performance conditions.
AirPower is dead and buried by Apple
Despite Apple’s position, several rumors have emerged pointing to a new interest of the brand in this product. In recent years, a new design for the product has been pointed out and it was even suggested that in 2020 we would have this new wireless charger.
The story would bring us MagSafe, wireless chargers for the new iPhone 12, compatible with previous iPhone and capable of delivering up to 7.5 W under ideal charging conditions.
Given this, Jon Proser, famous leaker from Apple, has now reaffirmed that the brand will have ended any type of testing and prototyping of new chargers that could resemble AirPower.
There are several alternatives to AirPower on the market
Although the AirPower has disappeared from the horizon, its spirit, form and function have not disappeared. Given the interest aroused by the Apple product, there are already several accessory manufacturers that have reincarnated their essence in their own solutions.
