As the Apple Insider advances, Apple’s upcoming AirPods may contain interesting technology for hearing. It is the transmission of sound by bone conduction. This would be the next step in noise cancellation technology, to isolate the user from outside sounds.
Bone conduction hearing makes use of a sound processor that converts them into vibrations. These vibrations are then transmitted through the skull, directly to the ear. It is the same system used in hearing aids, as it ignores any problem in the ear, using the natural channels of the human body.
However, this system would dramatically change the design of the AirPods. For bone conduction to be successful, some sound and air transmitting components are needed, as shown in the patent image.
Therefore, if Apple does launch AirPods with this technology, the design should be different from traditional AirPods. On the other hand, Apple may be able to work on the technology in order to condense it into the well-known format of its True Wireless headsets.
AirPods remain the best-selling True Wireless headsets in the world
Whether with or without bone conduction, AirPods remain Apple’s best-selling accessory, as well as the best-selling True Wireless headsets on the market. Its price does not prevent users from buying it, especially users of other Apple products.
Apple is expected to launch a new version of the AirPods Pro in 2021 or 2022, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In any case, this year we should not see any new headset features by the brand.
