And if the future Nintendo Switch Pro was really a new 4K Dock

New tracks in the latest firmware for the Nintendo Switch

Nintendo Switch 2019

The latest firmware update for the Nintendo Switch It has not only brought improvements in terms of performance and some other minor detail that affects the two existing models, but also a couple of lines of code that some expert users in data mining have managed to find.

These lines are not that they provide clear and detailed information, but whoever understands the subject is able to connect the dots and conjecture about what they could mean for the future of the device or possible new launches. So that’s what they’ve done with what they’ve found in the latest update, see what they might be referring to, and pitch ideas that aren’t far-fetched.

Of course, before the two lines of code that have been found and are serving to conjecture different scenarios:

  • is_crda_fw_update_supported
  • 4kdp_preferred_over_usb30

Removing some specific abbreviation, most will not say much, but if you move on programming issues you may see it clearer. Still, we tell you what is being talked about based on each of them.

With the first line it is believed that Nintendo is referring to the support for firmware updates of a new base. A Dock that would have a new chip that would help in 4K content management. So even if the game was running at a better resolution on the console screen, when connected to a current television, it could take advantage of the native resolution of its panel and display the content in 4K. Something similar to what is currently happening with the Switch and its Dock that lets you play at 1080p instead of the 720p on the console screen.

PowerA nano Enhanced Controller

The second line for its part suggests that 4K video output would be through a DisplayPort connection which would be available through the USB C connector of the console itself. Something that you already know that also happens now, is through said connector how the Switch outputs the video signal when it is connected to a television or external screen.

The question is whether this will apply to the new console, a model where everything will be identical except for small changes in very specific components, or to the current Nintendo Switch. Because if it were the latter, the idea of a new Switch Pro would disappear and it would give way to a new base.

New Dock, Nintendo Switch Pro, or both?

It is very likely, as well as logical, that the software of the new Switch Pro was practically identical to that of the current console. Hence, these lines are already in the firmware that was released for the laptop that many of us have in our homes. However, it also opens the door to possibility that there is no Switch Pro but just a new Dock, a base that would allow the current one to improve the graphic quality of its games when used with an external screen.

If so, many would jump for joy, because it would not be the same expense to buy a new Dock than to have to buy a new console. Of course, this is all speculation, because surely Nintendo will be compensated much more to sell new machines with their respective new bases that would give that support when it comes to displaying content at 4K resolution.

The truth is that just seeing a Dock, a new Nintendo Switch Pro or both products are a possibility that cannot be confirmed or ruled out until the company officially makes the announcement. Which could come soon, because they have already announced that they will be at E3 to be held in June completely online.
